Developed within the Harvard Innovation Labs, The Whole Past is an independent, digital-first world history initiative exploring the connections that have shaped societies across regions, centuries, and borders.
At its heart is a simple question: what does world history look like when Europe is no longer treated as its automatic centre?
The project seeks to move beyond Eurocentric historical frameworks by foregrounding connected and comparative histories across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Indigenous societies, and the wider world, while still examining Europe as one important region within a much larger global story.
The Whole Past focuses on movement and exchange: migration, trade, empires, oceans, material culture, intellectual networks, science, religion, law, and the circulation of people, ideas, and objects across time.
Through essays, scholar conversations, maps, digital exhibits, archival features, and collaborative research projects, The Whole Past aims to make rigorous historical scholarship more accessible while encouraging a broader, more genuinely global understanding of the past.
